SUDAN HOLOCAUST (please excuse unfinished pages- we are working to complete them) Southern Sudan is a vast graveyard and scene of historic genocide, due to policies of the Government of Sudan (G.O.S.). The northern region has waged a 24+ year campaign to eliminate the indigenous southern people. Islamic militias raided black, non-Muslim areas in South Sudan, almost obliterating them. The government's expressed aim was to make the entire nation forcibly Islamic. So effective is this campaign, that more than 2 million are dead, with estimates of 50-90,000 enslaved by their northern "neighbors". Many survivors wander homeless or live in camps throughout Sudan and neighboring countries. Within the last four years the G.O.S. began to wage war on yet more citizens. This time, indigenous Muslims in the western regions of Darfur. Apparently racism trumps religious bigotry as impetus for genocide in Sudan. Recently a peace treaty was signed between the government and the Southern Liberation Army ( a group of surviving men determined to keep their people from being annihilated.) Although this is a great breakthrough, it does not even begin to address the massive problem of slaves still in Sudan, their release and rehabilitation. Some areas of Southern Sudan are slowing being resettled by refugees. They are in desperate need of supplies and help rebuilding. In spite of the relative peace, the G.O.S. remains firmly in control of the oil reserves in the South. This guarantees continued governmental interference and pillaging of the indigenous people. China Petrol is the major player in this game and several other oil companies benefit from the rape of South Sudan to this day. (Learn more about slavery, oil and Sudan.) A few groups have consistently tried to help the Sudanese, either with direct aid, or through media attention and political action. Almost no NGO's and aid groups, including the Red Cross, were allowed into Southern Sudan for years. The few who did were targeted by bombing and other attacks from the G.O.S.
